Situated in the heart of the ‘Ring of Kerry’ on the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, the valley known as the Ballaghbeama Gap is home to one of the richest concentrations of prehistoric rock art in Ireland. These carvings are notoriously difficult to date with precision but these examples date to the Bronze Age at the latest. It is becoming increasingly accepted that cup and ring rock art in Ireland, like this example, dates to the Neolithic, in the centuries around 3,000BC.

The two townlands of Derrynablaha and Derreeny are separated by the Kealduff River and although the rock art at Derrynablaha is more well known, Derreeny has its fair share of exceptional examples.

This includes this small but charming piece, situated on the slope of the river valley. There are wide views south towards the Beara Peninsula but its the prominence of Knocklomena which seems to be emphasised by the carved face of this stone.

Print only on heavyweight fine art cotton rag paper with white border. Sizing relates to paper size.
