A very impressive portal tomb located in a quiet river valley just outside Dublin. The capstone weighs over 40 tonnes and despite being supported by a concrete frame inside, the structure is very complete.

The scale of this superb portal tomb is hard to judge by any photo I've yet seen of it, it may look small here seen from the thick grass in front of it, but the capstone weighs around 40 tonnes and is almost 5 metres square.

From the opposite side the tomb is above the dip of the river bank, the valley continues high above the tomb. You can also access the site through either the 'Dolmen House' or 'Glendruid House' on the Brennanstown Road.

The route from Brennanstown Vale along a disused railway line and forest track is well worth the effort, but leave plenty of time to make it back in daylight!.

Solid and very, very heavy, from the front the capstone is most impressive and dwarfs the large portal and door stones.

The capstone was chosen very deliberately, it forms a wedge with the thickest end peaking above the portal stones, reaching a height of around 3.5 metres.

The chamber inside is large, though a concrete frame now supports the structure. The floor is below ground level and it seems the builders ensured the chamber would remain dry by cutting a 'V' shaped set of channels on the top of the capstone.

Few are prepared for the sight of this, approaching from behind it the tomb is out of view until you emerge through an old gateway some four metres back. (Unless you can make your way across the river just beside the tomb).
