One of Corks finest circles on the spectacular Beara Peninsula.
Ardgroom circle on the Beara peninsula in county Cork like so many other circles in this area overlooks some magnificent scenery. Mountain tops in all four directions with the Kenmare estuary in view, the circle has a raised knoll above it where these views can be taken in in full, including the circle itself.
The stones here are all tall, thin and have pointed or jagged tops and sides. Some are missing and one fine stone lies prostrate inside the circle, there are three other stones inside that may have been added as an arrangement at the circles centre.
Looking north, these four pillars seem to mark and extended portal.
The sun sets in the west behind the circle, the massive knife like outlying stone seems to point through the circle to the sunset at this time of year.
The dramatic red light of sunset lighting up the circle and the hills behind it as storm clouds close in for the night.
Each of these stones are as tall or taller than a man and the circle is very impressive when not overcrowded with gorse as in these pictures.
A view in a north-westerly direction showing the large outlier pointing through the circle.
