Probably the most complete court tomb in Ireland after restoration and excavation.
Creevykeel Court Tomb, just off the main road between Sligo and Donegal, is possibly the best preserved court tomb in Ireland, rivalled only be Creggandevesky in Co. Tyrone. Although cramped into a walled enclosure, the sheer massive scale of the tombs here is staggering. The photo on left was taken from the top of the surrounding wall and it is hard to take in the whole site except from up high.
Looking from the capstone over the entrance to the chambers, into the large galleries which have no remaining roofing, but do have well preserved walling.
The massive court in front of the tomb is almost entirely enclosed with just a narrow walkway in the centre allowing access to the court and tomb.
As can be seen here, the site had also been used thousands of years later to smelt iron in the structure protruding from the left side of the court in this picture.
A closer view of the Iron smelting structure.
