Megalithic Tomb enclosed by a very large henge of earth, with frequent entrances cut into the bank.
'The Giants Ring' is a massive earthen henge, the banks of which enclose an area 180 metres in diameter. Slightly off centre inside the henge are the remains of a passage tomb, though at first sight it looks more like a wrecked portal tomb or dolmen.
It is located off (and well signposted from) the A55 ring road south of Belfast City and there is ample parking right next to the henge itself.
No cairn, kerb or passage remains, though according to 'Sacred Ireland' by Cary Meehan the tomb was encircled by a ring of stones in the 18th century according to some sketchy sources.
This photo taken from the top of the bank shows the passage tomb inside the ring and a section of the bank on the opposite side. This henge-passage tomb is unique in Ireland and the henge itself is also the largest of its type on the island.
