Stonehenge, as possibly the worlds most famous megalithic construction, needs no introduction. Few monuments however, require as much explanation. Built over many stages across the centuries of the late Neolithic into the Bronze Age, Stonehenge is a unique structure that conforms to no megalithic traditions in its final presentation and as much as it has come to symbolise megalithic culture in general, it is starkly at odds with almost all of that ancient tradition.
Aubrey Burl, an expert in megalithic archaeology has formed the opinion that Stonehenge was built by foreigners, wood craftsmen by tradition as evidenced by traditional carpentry techniques carved instead in sarsen stone from the Salisbury plains and Bluestones from the Preseli Mountains in Wales, over 200 miles west. In contrast, most stone circles are built using whatever local stone was to hand, the mystery as to how massive stones from Wales found their way to Stonehenge either by transportation by humans or glaciers is still unsolved.
