Portugals finest stone circle, Almendres is a very impressive site. Massive, irregular and closely spaced stones with a smoothed appearance wander downhill from a prominent viewing point which overlooks the town of Evora and many miles beyond.
Formerly a smaller, more compact arrangement, the site was enlarged uphill to incorporate another circular structure of much larger stones and the whole complex faces the sunrise.
Many of the large stones bear carvings of 'shepherds crooks', circles and phalli though most are very weather worn and difficult to spot.
