Prominently sited on a high ridge above the plains below where the motorway and local roads between Evora and Montemor pass, this impressive, if denuded, example of a Portugese anta (or dolmen as they were popularly called) is medium sized but still quite a handsome ruin. According to Julian Cope in The Megalithic European, this anta had been occupied by a shoemaker until the middle of the last century and brickwork used to seal the many gaps is still evident. I can also attest to Cope's comments on the very boggy ground in the surrounding fields!
