The famous tumulus in Co. Meath, neighbour to the Knowth necropolis and the mysterious Dowth.
Each year a lottery is held to allocate the limited number of places available for people to view the solstice sunrise, every year over 25,000 people apply to be included in the draw but a large crowd always gathers on the hill in hope of a spectacular sunrise such as we had in 2004.
This famous 'triple spiral' carving is located int he very rear chamber, on an orthostat facing into the chamber rather than out towards the passage.
The left hand chamber has one very large spiral carved on it and more smaller ones as well as much more recent graffiti carved by visitors to the tomb over the last three centuries.
The Great Stone Circle is not a complete circle at all, though stones are dotted around the mound there are many large gaps where excavations revealed no sockets for additional stones. These three in particular are situated just outside the entrance to the passage and the shadow of the middle stone reportedly hits the entrance stone on winter solstice morning.
